Webinar Recap: One-Year-Pilot from the City of Kitchener

Staff from the City of Kitchener walked through twelve months of REALice at Sportsworld Arena: what it saved, what it took to implement, and what surprised them. The short version is below; the full webinar is worth the time if you're building a case for your own council.

Getting everyone aligned

Kitchener's biggest takeaway wasn't technical. Implementing REALice across the organization meant bringing frontline staff with them, and they're clear that's what made the difference between a system that's installed and a system that delivers.

A large drop in floodwater temperature

From an operations standpoint, the floodwater temperature dropped from 65.6°C to 17.5°C (150°F to 63.5°F). That one change is what drives the energy numbers above.

Payback

The payback period came in at around 3.5 years, before any utility incentives are applied.

And the ice

Ice quality didn't take a hit. If anything it improved: harder ice meant skate sharpening intervals went from 5 hours to 10.
