21 Nov Operator Spotlight: Tim Smitten, Midland, ON
Tim explained that when they first installed the system, they struggled with sticky ice and experimented with the brine settings to find the right balance.
After some adjustment, they discovered that they could run their ice 4.5 degrees warmer than ever before. The change brought significant energy savings and reduced compressor run time, extending equipment life. He noted that the ice surface has improved noticeably — ruts are smaller, floods are smoother, and even newer operators are finding it easier to maintain consistent ice quality.
Tim also highlighted how their salt use has dropped dramatically, from a skid every three weeks to one about every two months. Overall, he said the past two months have been all positive, with better ice, lower costs, and a more efficient operation.
