Oak Bay Rec saving about 40t of greenhouse gas emissions per year

Oak Bay Rec Centre is located just outside Victoria, British Columbia. It has a multi-user arena facility that is open all year round and the ice is resurfaced on average 8 times per day. The Oak Bay Rec Centre operations team has committed to a strategic energy management program as the municipality moves toward lowering their electrical consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Ken Olson, Operations & Energy Coordinator, speaks about the impact the REALice system has for their facility.

How has REALice impacted the Oak Bay Rec Centre?

“Well it’s really helped us with our consumption of natural gas and hydro and we’re thinking were are going to save about 40 tonnes of greenhouse gases in the first year of this … and well over 100,000 kilowatts of hydro. So, it helps us lower our greenhouse gas goals and saves us a lot of money.” He adds, “the ice has been excellent and there have been no complaints from our customers an no concerns from our operators.”
