How to Get Great Ice All Season Long

How do you keep the ice looking as good throughout the season as it did when you first put it in? It can be tough, especially with dark colours in your logos and text—problem areas tend to fade quickly and can be unrecognizable eyesores come March. It all comes down to some simple best practices.

Simple Best Practices for Happy Ice

Whether you’re using REALice or not, these best practices apply:

  • Keep your blade sharp
  • Keep the spreader towel clean
  • Keep the ice at a reasonable thickness
  • Drive the ice resurfacing machine consistently. This is NOT a race.
  • Shave with each ice make, don’t just pick up the snow
  • If your resurfacing machine is equipped with washwater, use it. If not, (or if you don’t) you’ll need to shave more.

Ice makers using REALice find that by following these easy best practices (as well as a few others specific to REALice), they don’t need as much on-ice maintenance as they used to with hot water floods.

The operations team in Slave Lake has never had to go on their ice once this year to patch a gouge. That’s how durable the REALice ice is.
