24 Sep St. Albert Expands REALice to Jarome Iginla and Kinex Arenas
The City of St. Albert continues to lead the way in sustainable rink operations. Following successful results at Servus Credit Union Place, where three rinks have been operating with REALice for years, the City has now installed REALice systems at the Jarome Iginla Arena and Kinex Arena.
With these installations, all five indoor arenas in St. Albert are now running with REALice — making the community one of the first in Canada to convert its entire rink portfolio to cold-water resurfacing.
What the City Says About Ice Quality
According to the City of St. Albert’s official news release:
“Installing REALice makes the ice smoother and more compact, maintaining the ice quality for users.”
— City of St. Albert
The arenas see thousands of hours of use every year, and with REALice, operators can maintain excellent ice conditions while significantly cutting down on natural gas and electricity consumption.
Support from MCCAC
The Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC), which supported this retrofit, highlights how REALice works:
“REALice-treated water eliminates the need to use heated water when building or resurfacing your ice and reduces compressor loads.”
— MCCAC
By removing micro air bubbles without the need for heating, REALice helps create clearer, harder, and more durable ice while lowering energy demand.
A Community-Wide Success
With REALice now at Servus Place, the Jarome Iginla Arena, and Kinex Arena, St. Albert demonstrates what’s possible when sustainability and high-quality ice go hand in hand.
